I’m Presenting at the ASCA 2026 Annual Conference

Event
ASCA 2026 Annual Conference

Dates
December 2–5, 2026

Location
The Westin Long Beach, California

Session
Forensic Analysis: Finding the Real Causal Agents of Tree Dysfunction and Death

Format
45-minute lecture

Over 50% of urban trees die before maturity. Wind, disease, and insects usually get the blame — but they’re rarely the real cause. I’ll show consulting arborists how to find out what actually happened.

About the Session

Why did a limb split out?

Why did a tree fall over, or die?

“Wind,” “disease,” or “insects” are the answers I hear most — and they’re almost never the real story. If urban forestry is serious about sustainability, superficial explanations aren’t good enough anymore.

Join me December 2–5 in Long Beach as I break down forensic analysis — how to trace tree failure back to its real cause, not the usual guesses.

More than half of all urban trees die before they reach maturity.

In this session, I walk through forensic analysis — the art and science of tracing tree damage or death back to its real causal agent, using the same investigative process I bring to every site: examining the tree itself, exhuming and inspecting the site, gathering off-site evidence, and taking statements from the people who knew the tree.

It’s the same approach that uncovered what was actually killing the palm population in a case I worked on in Mexico City — the real cause was never what anyone assumed going in.

Most people are surprised by what they learn are the most common causal agents. If we can’t correctly identify why our urban trees are failing, we can’t fix the pattern — we just keep repeating it. This session is about learning from those past mistakes so we can actually build toward longevity, sustainability, and long-term canopy value.

Who This Session Is For:

Consulting & commercial arborists working in tree risk assessment, appraisal, or tree health consulting.

Urban foresters & municipal arborists managing city canopy or post-disaster tree recovery plans

Landscape & green industry professionals looking to sharpen their diagnostic skills

Tree care & disaster response specialists, including post-fire urban forestry and mortality assessment

Expert witnesses & consultants working the legal side of tree risk, insurance claims, and valuations
