Scott Seargeant:
A Life Dedicated to the Science of Trees

Beyond maintenance. Beyond aesthetics. 47 years of uncovering the biological truth behind the urban canopy.

Mentored by a Legend: Dr. Alex Shigo

The authority of Scott Seargeant is rooted in the very origins of modern tree science.

After his time at Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, California, Scott had the privilege of being mentored by Dr. Alex Shigo, the father of modern arboriculture.

Under Dr. Shigo’s guidance, Scott furthered his education, learning how trees survive, grow, and defend themselves through CODIT (Compartmentalization of Decay in Trees). This scientific foundation allows Scott Seargeant to see structural weaknesses and biological stresses that others simply miss.

Decades of Impact: Case Studies in Excellence

The Perimeter Tree Screen (Technical Preservation)

In a high-stakes residential subdivision, I was called to consult on 104 screening trees that were rapidly dying. Most saw a lost cause; Scott Seargeant saw a drainage and soil crisis.

By re-engineering the grade, adjusting soil chemistry, and implementing a precision drip system, we achieved a 100% survival rate. Two years later, not a single tree has been lost.

Downtown Corcoran Revitalization (Urban Planning)

Twenty years ago, downtown Corcoran was in decline. I was hired to assess a disjointed urban forest and recommend a sustainable path forward.

I designed a strategic street tree plan using deciduous varieties to balance winter sunlight and summer shade.

Today, the downtown is alive again, a testament to how the right tree, planted with the right vision, can revive a community.

The Changing of the Guard in Hanford (Risk Management)

In downtown Hanford’s historic municipal park, public safety was at risk. Decades of brutal pruning had left the canopy structurally compromised.

I performed a forensic assessment and made the difficult recommendation to renew the cycle of life.

By educating the public on why these 50-year-old trees were failing, I helped the city transition to a new, healthy forest that now stands strong 20 years later.

Published Author & Industry Voice

A career-long paper trail of authority. Scott Seargeant is not only a practitioner but a contributor to the body of knowledge in arboriculture.

As a published author and contributor to leading industry journals, his work has helped define the standards of practice that shape the industry today.

His writings translate complex tree biology—such as the CODIT model learned from Dr. Shigo—into actionable strategies for preservation and forensic analysis.
